What is the Kansas Funeral Trust?
The Kansas Funeral Directors Association's Kansas Funeral Trust, established in 1983, is a master trust created and sponsored by the Kansas Funeral Directors Association. The Trustee of the Kansas Funeral Trust is UMB Bank Kansas. Under Kansas law, many small pre-need funeral trust accounts may be pooled into one large master trust. The pooling process allows for the professional management of funds by UMB Bank.
What does the “Annuity Investment Option” mean?
The Annuity Investment Option provides a tax-deferred way to grow your funds at a fixed interest rate. The current annual rate is 3.77%, and by company practice, is locked in for five years. There are no 1099 forms or annual tax reporting requirements while the funds remain in the annuity.
How does it work?
When you make arrangements with your funeral director and wish to place monies into the trust to pay for the funeral, you sign the funeral trust agreement supplied to you by your funeral director. Your check is made payable to UMB Bank, in its capacity as trustee. You will receive confirmation of the transaction from UMB Bank.
Who keeps the records?
UMB Bank will provide you and your funeral director with quarterly computerized reports of the funds deposited. You will have an exact breakdown of principal and income earned for your account on a regular quarterly basis.
How are funds invested and taxes handled?
Funds in the Kansas Funeral Trust are invested in accordance with Kansas law to provide safety, liquidity and income. The earnings on this fund are taxable to you, and the appropriate tax forms will be sent annually. However, most people depositing monies in the Kansas Funeral Trust are in an income bracket that should not produce significant tax liability from income and earnings.
Are revocable and irrevocable accounts available?
Kansas law allows both Revocable and Irrevocable pre-financed, pre-need contracts. The Kansas Funeral Trust provides that either of these methods of funding may be utilized. Easy-to-use forms for this purpose are available from your funeral director.
