How to Talk to Families Who’ve Suffered a Loss by Suicide

A loss by suicide is like no other, and the grief can be especially traumatic. Families often feel intense shame. Because of the uncomfortable nature of suicide, directors are often unsure of the right thing to do or say. This program offers guidance on how to support families who have suffered a loss by suicide including what to say or not to say and how to spot the bereaved who are at risk of suicide.

Attendees can ask the speaker any question in a safe, non-judgmental and supportive environment. Downloads and handouts are provided by the speaker.

Presenter: Anne Moss Rogers is a TEDx speaker, storyteller, author, and registered suicide prevention trainer. Her blog, Emotionally Naked reached over a half million in its first three years on the subjects of suicide and grief and she has written a book, Diary of a Broken Mind. Despite her family’s best efforts, Anne Moss’s 20-year-old son Charles died by suicide on June 5, 2015 after many years of struggle with anxiety, depression and ultimately addiction. She chronicled her family’s tragedy in a newspaper article that went viral and started a blog called Emotionally Naked that has been read over a million times. She’s a national public speaker on suicide and grief. Her story has been featured in the New York Times and she has a TEDx called, “Can a Blog Save Lives?”

Taking Our Funeral Celebration Up a Notch

It’s not news that people are longing for more personalized funerals than ever before. People are wanting to express themselves in all manner of ways, open to more celebration, lightheartedness, and sometimes even fun. Even in grief, smiles can save the day. Designing a life celebration that is unique, life-affirming, and unforgettable is a gift to any family. The more ways we can be creative the better!

Presenter: Kyle Tevlin is the founder of I Want a Fun Funeral, a consulting company helping people create deeply meaningful and unforgettable goodbye celebrations.
