Dealing With Difficult Families

Historically, funeral homes have offered safe places of comfort for grievers. Some grieving families, given the economic times, become unpredictable and uncontrollable. Increasingly "acceptable" behavior in funeral settings is a moving target. One "difficult" family could compromise your funeral environment for other families, gain unflattering news coverage, tarnish your reputation in a community and generate enormous stress on your staff. Is their money worth it? How can you establish boundaries with the "difficult" families?



Harold Ivan Smith is a grief specialist on the teaching faculties of Saint Luke’s Hospital, Kansas City, Missouri, and the Carondolet Medical Institute in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He is recognized as a Fellow in Thanatology by the Association for Death Education and Counseling. He has also received the Distinguished Service Award from ADEC in 2009. He has served as Co-Chair of the ADEC Conferences in Albuquerque in 2005 and Kansas City in 2010. He earned the doctorate from Asbury Theological Seminary and the EdS. from George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University. He speaks frequently to grievers and grief counselors and educators. He has lectured in Vietnam, Taiwan, Switzerland, England and Haiti.

His writing as been published in Illness, Loss, and Crisis, Living with Loss, The Director, The Forum and other magazines. His forthcoming book is Borrowed Narratives (Routledge) to be released at ADEC 2011. His primary research is on borrowing narratives from the griefs of U.S. Presidents and First Ladies. He has facilitated Grief Gatherings, creative storytelling groups for grievers, at Saint Luke’s Hospital, Kansas City, Missouri, for fifteen years.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Kansas Funeral Directors Association (KFDA) is to cultivate and promote the art and science of the funeral service profession; to elevate and sustain the professional character and education of funeral directors and embalmers; to promote communications, good will and mutual improvements; to protect the health and welfare of the general public; to encourage the enacting and enforcing of proper and just law relative to funeral and burial practices within the State; to represent and safeguard the common interests of its members and to foster and maintain among them high professional ideals and ethics.
